The Ontario Soil and Crop
Improvement Association (OSCIA)
will also be on-site with an
informative, hands-on plot
demonstration area focused on
"Wheat, Weeds and More."
Producerscan bring their production
questions and talk with the experts.
From "hitting the target"
spraying to "how low can you
go" manure application,
OSCIA and Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food (OMAF)
demonstration area promises to offer
practical, hands-on information.
"Putting new technology to the
test is the focus of our
OSCIA/OMAF demo plot and
exhibits," says OSCIA Stewardship
Program Co-ordinator Andrew
Graham. "We aim to help producers
obtain the latest technical
information and at the same time,
they can assess the new crop
management techniques first hand."
One of the new demonstrations
this year will explore "how low can
you go?" with respect to solid -
manure application. Understanding
low rate application for manure
spreading is important, especially as
nutrient management regulations
emerge.
Also new, a Spraying Penetration
Demo will give producers a chance
to see how far into the plant canopy
the spray will travel using different
nozzle types and with different
sprayer setups.
Hard-hit beef producers have
something new to look forward to at
the Beef Expo at the show: its first
beef breed championship showcase.
The 2003 Beef Expo, which
includes a new Cover -All fabric
building, will feature the Canadian
Limousin Showcase with more than
100 -head competing for the
championship ribbons at this
premiere event.
Jordon Underhill, livestock
marketing co-ordinator, says the
Limousin Showcase marks an
exciting new venture for the Beef
Expo. "The Limousin Showcase is
positioned to show-off the quality of
the breed in a natural, commercial
setting, making it an excellent fit and
addition to our Beef Expo."
In addition to the Limousin
Showcase held in a large outdoor
ring, there will be a special show for
4-H members with Limousin calves
as well as demonstrations of
ultrasound technology used as a tool
for geneticimprovement and carcass
quality.
Aiso for 2003, an expanded
Quality Carcass Competition
will put $2,000 in the pocket
of the cattle feeder who can produce
the Grand Champion beef carcass.
Producers can enter either a market
steer or heifer which will be on
display during the Beef Expo. After
