Perth Federation encourages minister to extend deadstock funding The Perth County Federation of Agriculture is looking for Ontario Agriculture and Food Minister, the Honourable Helen Johns, to extend funding for a program assisting deadstock collectors. The Livestock Mortality Recycling Project supported by the Healthy Futures for Ontario Agriculture program will quickly run out of funding. "The program has allowed deadstock collectors to continue to provide a valuable service to the entire livestock industry," said Federation Vice -President, Bob Martin, a dairy producer from Elma Township. " Although some animals can be composted or buried on farm, this is not always possible with larger mature animals" added Martin. Since the border has closed due to the BSE crisis, renderers have not been able to ship their product. Renderers cannot accept material from collectors. or have to charge them to take their material. The collectors either have no place to take their deadstock, or in turn have to increase service fees to livestock producers.
