The Rural Voice, 2003-08, Page 44model train complete with an older
version of a Wiarton streetscape
where the train and its cars whistle
through.
We also stopped at Patrick Lima's
Larkwhistle which has been the topic
of a number. of his popular books. It's
always a joy to see and he never fails
to surprise us with the variety of
perennials he coaxes to bloom.
The crew at Earthbound showed
us what can be done with a hay field
and they offered some unusual plants
for sale that were scooped up quite
quickly.
But I think my favourite was
Keppelcroft farm, east of Wiarton.
The owners had created their own
working version of a huge sundial
and a fairly accurate mini
Stonehenge. They had little treasures
hidden in wooded glades, angels
tacked up into arbours and a glass
chandelier inside a gothic inspired
arbour. I could have spent a few more
hours there.
There are brochures available at
your local tourism office on the
gardens of the Bruce that anyone can
visit. You can also check out their
web site. Do a search for Rural
Gardens of Grey Bruce. Please
remember that it is a real privilege to
view these gardens where hearts and
souls have been invested as well as a
lot of sweat. There are also garden
tours in a number of communities
and that really is an exceptional way
to see what plants grow in your zone
and what neat colour and leaf
combinations people are putting into
their gardens.
A toast to the wonderful people
who open their gardens to us each
year, may we show our respect by
leaving them as we found them.0
