An Important
Message on
Bovine
Spongiform
Encephalopathy
(BSE)
As Minister of Agriculture and
Food, I recently had the
opportunity to meet with my
federal, provincial and territorial
counterparts in Winnipeg to
discuss key issues facing the
agriculture sector. Most
importantly, the current challenges
faced by industry since
the detection of a single
case of Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy (BSE).
To ensure maximum opportunity
for Canadian producers, provincial
and territorial Ministers called for
the suspension of further issuance
of supplementary import permits.
The federal Minister of
Agriculture and Agri -Food also
agreed to follow up immediately
with the Minister of International
Trade on this issue.
As Minister of Agriculture, I am
pleased to say that we have
accomplished our objective of
ensuring the interim Canada -
Ontario Recovery Program treats
all farmers equally. As well, I
along with my provincial/
territorial counterparts have been
successful in pressuring the
federal government to ensure that
access to the marketplace is
equitable among all cattle farmers.
The reopening of international
borders remains the priority for all
provinces.
Premier Ernie Eves and I are
committed to work in partnership
with federal, provincial and
territorial counterparts to work on
your behalf to find an acceptable
resolution to this situation.
