"We always want to be unique,"
Marlene says.
There's an advantage when people
know the ingredients have been
grown right outside the door and
brought in, she says. People seem to
like the idea of farm -fresh fruit
prepared in an approved kitchen.
part of their business is
preparing custom orders for
people who call ahead. The
jams, jellies and fruit toppings are
also sold in nearby stores, and
(through a friend) as far away as
Kingston.
The learning process continues for
the young couple. Marlene took a
cake decorating course at Fanshawe
College (she offers wedding cakes as
a service) and she and other staff

have taken safe food handlers
courses.
"Cleanliness is important to us,"
she says. "We try to have an
excellent reputation that way — to
take extra care."
Though things have generally
gone as well as could be expected for
the young couple, there have been
setbacks. This past harsh winter took
its toll in the orchard with a larger
than normal loss of trees.
So far, however, their leap of faith
has worked out well, though it's a
long time before all their crops will
be producing. That faith has not only
been on Mike and Marlene's part but
also on that of her parents, Fritz and
Kaethi Beyerlein who have backed
them all the way, she says. A young
couple to come up with such an
innovative plan is not likely to be
welcomed with open arms by lending
institutions, she notes.
In doing so, the Beyerlein's
helped put a new twist on the old
idea of a "family" farm. For this
family, you could say the
combination of imagination,
determination and hard slogging has
begun to bear fruit.0
Creating your Legacy...While enjoying today!
Have you considered how you want your assets distributed at the time/upon your
death? In Canada, there are laws that prohibit you from just giving your assets to your
friends and family. At death, unless you leave everything to your spouse, the tax laws
deem that you have sold your assets at fair market value. Your estate may have to pay
taxes on capital gains, probate fees and the deferred taxes on your unspent RRSP or
RRIF assets, thus reducing your gifts to your loved ones.
Plan Carefully: Creating, preserving and protecting your estate requires careful
planning now. With the continual changes in family estate and income tax laws, it is
most important to enlist the help of a lawyer, and accountant, as well as a
knowledgeable life insurance advisor such as Nancy Ackert.
Nancy will work with you to identify your goals and implement strategies to help reduce
estate taxes, make charitable bequests and assist you and your lawyer with updating
your will and power of attorney.
Identifying your goals: Are you concerned about living for today or are you more
concerned about providing for your family? In your absence, do you have a plan to
minimize taxes, or have you considered the equalization of assets between your
children? Do you have a cottage that one of your children may want to keep in the
family, rather than it be sold?
Reducing estate taxes and probate fees: Nancy can help you identify your options for
reducing such fees. Some strategies many include: a) keep certain assets out of your
estate, b) the use of life insurance to provide income for your loved ones, pay
outstanding debts, final expenses, offset capital gains taxes or pay estate taxes,
c) considering planned or charitable giving.
Ensure vour will and power of attorney are uo to date., You must have an updated clearly
specified will and power of attorney, to be assured your wishes will be adjudicated
properly.
Creating your legacy for today and tomorrow is a process. There are numerous
strategies to be considered and what better way than for you to plan with your own
"personal" team including a lawyer, accountant and life insurance
advisor.
