20 THE RURAL VOICE
The sandy soil and sheltered,
lakeside site allow a wide variety of
fruit varieties to be grown.
water needs of the various plants.
The young couple juggles work
and professional life (they
have a young daughter, Kayla)
with the help of a dedicated work
force of six full-time staff (divided
about half and half between the
indoor and outdoor operations) and
five part-timers. In the summer they
may have up to 20 pickers working at
any time, moving from one crop to
the next.
"We have a good, reliable staff,"
Marlene says. "It takes everybody to
make this go round."
The retail/restaurant part of the
business is open from Easter to
Christmas. Summer is the best season
with weekends busiest time in the
spring and fall.
The restaurant offers everything
from light breakfasts to soup and
sandwich lunches. Once a month
they hold a dinner and they have a
high demand for Thanksgiving and
Christmas. They also rent out the
room for special functions and they
do catering.
"We try to use our own products,"
Marlene says. People can come for
ice cream sundaes, for instance and
the ice cream is purchased but it will
be served with their own toppings.
