Their retail outlet opened in May
2002 and Marlene admits "We didn't
know what to expect. When you
open you never know how it's going
to turn out. We've been very
pleased."
By early this June business was
already well ahead of last year,
despite wet cold weather and a
tourist slump in the Bayfield area.
Luckily, both partners were used
to hard work because they have put
in plenty of long days getting things
going.
They took a leap of faith in
going a different route than
most farming operations.
Marlene admits there was a little bit
of "If you build it they will come" to
their idea. But they did plenty of
planning before they leaped.
They searched for just the right
property for years before buying this
80 -acre parcel in April 2001. They
wanted a property with sandy soil
and a water source for irrigating.
Their orchard and fields are
surrounded by bush which provides
shelter from the winds off Lake
Huron (they've constructed high
fences to protect the crops from
wildlife).
