Social issues dominate public speeches
Elementary school students spoke
on a variety of topics as they
participated in the 58th Annual
Public Speaking Competition,
sponsored by the Grey County
Federation of Agriculture, held at
Annesley United Church in Markdale
on Tuesday April 22.
Past -president Karl Chittka
reminded the students they were all
"winners" and congratulated them on
the high calibre of their speeches.
The judges did, however, have to
select three winners from the eight
competitors. Paul DeJong, president,
presented the awards.
Environmental issues prevailed in
the Junior category (Gr. 4-6) where
the winning speech on "Bird
Watching" was delivered by Emmi
Ott of Notre Dame Separate School.
Second was Grace Scott of Derby
Public School with her speech on
"Being a Hockey sister". Third was

Hodges, Egremont C.S.; Leah
Holliday, Egremont C.S.; and Roisin
Lyder, Holland -Chatsworth C.S.
Thanks were given to the many
volunteers who helped with time-
keeping, judging, and convening and
to the township federations who
provided refreshments. The
federation considers public speaking
to be an important art as students gain
confidence in themselves. Many
students go on to become leaders in
their communities.
