The reality is, more children are
staying at home by themselves
while they wait for a parent to
come home from work.
Although Ontario is one of the
safest places in the world to live,
threatening situations do arise and
kids must be taught how to deal with
them, especially when home alone.
Parents, teach children to know
their full name, age, telephone
number, area code, city, province,
and how to contact you, or another
trusted person in case of an
emergency. Also show children how
to contact the police, fire department,

or ambulance services and when to
make these phone calls.
It is very important to tell your
child to phone an emergency number
if s/he feels threatened.
Also, teach your children the fire
escapes of the house and let them
know they can call for help from a
neighbour's house.
Have a set of rules that the child
must follow when staying at home
alone. These rules should be posted
somewhere in the house and be
written clearly so they are
understood.
When your children are home
alone, they should tell phone callers
that a parent is there but is too busy
to come to the phone. (eg. in the
shower). Children should cut phone
calls short with strangers and hang up
if the stranger continues to talk.
When your children are home
alone and someone comes to the
door, teach them to find out the
identity of the person without
opening the door. If your child
doesn't know the person at the door,
they shouldn't open it. Again, they
should tell the stranger that a parent
is busy and the stranger can come
back later.
The Internet is another area where
children should be taught how to use
it safely. The following internet
safety tips came from Child Find
Canada.
Keep the computer in a common
room, like the family room or den
