11. Livestock facilities and
operating machinery should be "off-
limits" to young children. Adult
supervision is required at all times.
12. Shield dangerous machinery
components, electrical boxes, and
wiring. Place out of reach or fit with
locking devices.
13. Store pesticides and other
dangerous chemicals in locked
facilities.
14. Place warning decals on all
grain bins, silos, wagons, and trucks.
15. Double-check that no one is
inside grain wagons or bins before
unloading them.
Operating at speeds from nine
to 16 rotations per second, the
power take off (PTO) is one
of the most dangerous pieces of farm
equipment and leaves no time to
react to an entanglement.
Children should be taught to stay
away from PTOs. When kids get
older and take on farm duties, parents
play the most important rule in
teaching them how to work around
PTOs.
The following safety rules from the
Ontario Farm Safety Association
should keep children safe when
working around PTOs.
1. Wear only close -fitting clothing
and avoid wearing clothes with big
cuffs, zippers, or drawstrings and tie
back long hair.
2. Make sure the PTO shields are in
place and in working condition.
3. Start and stop the PTO only
when sitting in the tractor seat.
4. Never step over a PTO.
5. Never allow young children to
play near the PTO unit or work area.
More farmers are working at
several agricultural places at once
and need to drive farm equipment on
the roadway.
By law, a child cannot drive a
tractor on the road until they are 16
years old. Before allowing a child to
do so, go over these precautions to
ensure a safe trip.
Conduct a pre -trip inspection
which includes the brakes, steering,
lights, reflectors, and slow moving
vehicle sign.
The slow moving vehicle sign must
be in the centre of the back of the
rearmost vehicle, between 0.5 metres
and two metres above the roadway.
The sign must be clearly visible from
