The Rural Voice, 2003-06, Page 33with friends, to always ride single file
on the street and never take any
riders on your bike. Your child could
easily lose their balance and fall over
with the bike, or suddenly swerve
into oncoming cars.
Teach your children to know and
use the proper hand signals just as
the driver of a car uses the blinkers.
Remind them to always check behind
before attempting a turn.
When turning left, your child
should hold their arm straight out and
make the turn slowly. If they're
turning right, they should bend their
elbow and hold their arm up in an 'L'
shape before turning slowly. To stop,
teach them to bend their elbow
pointing downward in an upside
down "L" shape and come to a stop.
Summer time means kids will be
helping their parents, or other
relatives, by working on the
farm.There are many different
aspects to working on the farm and
each has their own safety precautions
that should be followed. Before
letting children work on the farm, go
over this checklist from the Ontario
Farm Safety Association.
1. Allow no riders!
2. Make sure children are safe
before moving equipment or backing
up.
3. Don't allow children to play
with idle machinery.
4. Leave hydraulic equipment
(front end loaders, 3 -point
implements, combine heads) in the
"down position"
5. Brakes should be locked and
keys removed from the ignition when
tractors and self-propelled machines
are parked.
6. Always leave a tractor PTO
lever in the neutral position.
7. Keep machinery in good repair.
Pay particular attention to protective
shielding, ROPS, and seat belts.
8. Make safety training a must
before children are allowed to
operate machinery. A degree of
supervision will continue to be
needed until teens become
experienced operators.
9. Farm ponds and manure storage
structures should be surrounded by
child -proof fencing.
10. Practice good housekeeping.
Don't leave items lying around to
create a tripping hazard. Heavy
objects shouldn't be left leaning
