Privately owned forests make
up a minority of the forests in
Canada but they produce a
disproportionate amount of wood
fibre, said Victor Brunette, a
forestry planner from eastern
Ontario when he spoke recently
to a conference at the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority.
Across the country privately
owned woodlands are
outperforming crown lands, in
some cases because they are
located on better soils and closer
to the forest infrastructure. In
British Columbia, for instance
private land produces 4.1 cubic
meters of harvestable wood per
hectare per year compared to the
average of 1.6 for all forest
lands. In Ontario, the yield is .9
cubic metres per hectare
compared to .6 for all forests.
Private forest holdings seem
to be concentrated in eastern
Canada, Brunette said. A high
percentage of our hardwoods are
grown on private lands in the
Great Lakes -St. Lawrence area
and in the Acadian forest
regions.
There are 425,000 owners of
forest parcels in the country,
175,000 in Ontario. The average
size is 45 hectares.
In Quebec, where many
landowners don't live on the
land, co-operatives have been set
up to market wood from their
woodlots. There are also
marketing boards for logs in
Quebec. The marketing boards
worked well when there were
few buyers and many sellers but
now there are more local
sawmills and they aren't as
important. Still, they help
provide programs for landowners
such as incentives to undertake
forest management plans.0
programs operated by the Ontario
association for woodlot owners
including a service directory on the
internet at Ontariowoodlot.com. The
group is also starting a website on tax
issues for woodlot owners, he said.
The association is also working on
Forest Stewardship Certification, a
third -party audited program which
proves a woodlot owner is managing
his or her forest for an acceptable
limit of sustainability. The group is
trying to develop premium markets
for wood from FSC -standard
woodlots, he said.0
