Insect repellents can also be used
on the horses. Again, a repellent
using DEET is best. However the
United States Department of
Agriculture points out that because of
perspiration by the horse and the
practicalities of trying to get
complete coverage of the animal,
keeping horses away from exposure
by keeping them in at night is a safer
bet.
If last year's patterns of infection
are replayed this year, there will be
little infection of humans until at
least July when the infected mosquito
population increases to a Targe
enough scale to bite people. It gives
farm families a little chance to reduce
mosquito habitat around their
properties.
Meanwhile OMAF has put
together education kits containing
video presentations and
comprehensive handout information
whkh have been distributed to all
equine and large animal veterinarians
in the province. Kits are also being
sent to county libraries, agricultural
colleges, OMAF resource centres,
and equestrian groups and
organizations. OMAF specialists like
Woodcock are involved in speaking
engagements for equestrian
stakeholders across the province. An
informational brochure is being
distributed to horse owners through
retail horse equipment suppliers as
well as through equine industry
organizations. Up-to-date and
relevant information for horse
owners and veterinarians is available
on the OMAF Web site.
The Ontario Ministry of Health
and Long -Term Care (MOHLTC) is
leading the Ontario government's
overall effort to combat the spread of
WNV infection in Ontario. To
augment the MOHLTC's
surveillance program, OMAF
collected and submitted equine blood
samples in 2002 to measure the
extent, regional distribution and
population risk factors of WNV
exposure. The 2002 surveillance
data contributed to improving testing
diagnostics for WNV and is helping
direct educational efforts in 2003.
Information on WNV and its effect
on horses is available at the OMAF
web site at www.gov.on.ca/omaf or

mation Centre at 1-877-424-1300.0
