The Rural Voice, 2003-04, Page 50Home Decorating Getting energg from hour home's furnishings Patti Robertson operates Classic Interiors in Wingham. By Patti Robertson The furnishings we select for our homes play a most important role in the energy anatomy of our homes. First and foremost all pieces must serve the purpose they have been bought for, as in a chair fitting the size of our body most aptly and being in itself most appropriately styled and scaled to harmonize with our interior. As well colours and fixtures of each piece should be to our desire. Whereas a rich -hued plaid fabric may be most stabilizing to one person, it can throw another's energy field off balance. Investigate your lifestyle noting the time you have for maintenance and upkeep of your home and various furniture pieces, the age of your kids, how much wear and tear your pets add to the household, and equate into this the type of fabrics and surfaces that will best serve your needs. Fine brocades, damask fabrics, highly polished wood finishes and marble table tops are all splendid, but do require an optimum level of attention. If, for lack of time and maintenance, they become marred and shabby these very elegant pieces will actually work against our energy field with a negativity that is most undesirable! If you happen to be in the position where furnishings are getting worn, it is a most positive energy boost to , refinish either with stains or by painting worn table tops and surfaces...in fact I have seen many an old worn table treated to a faux finish of marble or creative decoupage and as a result the piece became a beautiful keepsake, and testament to the owner's creativity. This usually works as a double boost of energy, not only adding new life but also the energies of satisfaction and accomplishment. Sofas and chairs that have become worn and torn take on 46 THE RURAL VOICE new life when treated to new slipcovers, whether you fashion your own, have them made or purchase them. I'm noticing the availability of slipcovers in every major superstore, and often they are paired with matching window fashions and accessorizing toss cushions and co- ordinated lampshades. When positioning our furnishings it is always in the best interest of energy dynamics to create small interesting conversational groupings in a circular fashion. Be aware of traffic patterns within any area of the home and do not position furnishings where people passing through will disrupt the healthy flow of energy. If you care about your guests you will always offer them what you deem as "the best seat in the house". Even before you ply your company with sweet treats you will receive rave reviews with this simple energy -packed gesture. Our energy is always reinforced and supported when we are positioned to see who is entering the room ... and positioning a focal point upon which to rest one's eye, is again a most desirable energy boost. If a room is to serve double duty, as in an office or craft space along with a library or den, it is always advisable to screen off the one area from the other so the various energies generated from one activity to the next do not cause a conflicting or negative balance. Be aware when TVs dominate a room and all seating is arranged with it as the focal point ... positive energy communication will become negligible. (Ergo the kids cannot possibly get any message you are trying to impart!) And even though big screen TVs are very much a desirable addition to one's home, we must recognize that these and other appliances affect our natural energy fields. The less we use loud entertainment units and turn to smaller TVs the less our psyches are affected. Kitchens and dining rooms should be separated from our main living space so that food does not dominate our energy field and encourage a "grazing mode". Food should nourish and nurture us as required and food should be utilized as a celebration of health, friendship and the bountiful lives we are privileged to live — not accessed as a continual source of gratification. So by separating our living area from our dining area we become more aware of our food and habits, thereby controlling negative energy -draining habits. There should be plenty of room around the table for the family and guests to be seated comfortably. Chairs should be in proportion to the table height and comfortable to sit in so the energy it takes to eat and digest one's food is supported. Pleasing furnishings, lighting, wall colouration and accessories all stimulate healthy eating habits and energetic conversation ...a most positive, healthy energy for all families dealing with today's hustle and bustle. In one's bedroom, the bed itself not only creates the pivotal focal point, it needs to support our body's energy rejuvenation in all possible ways. Start by placing the bed so as to have an optimum view of the entranceway and who may be entering the room...(this balances our energy and keeps one from being startled while in bed). Mirrors can assist by being positioned to capture a view we may not otherwise have. Be sure to rid your bedchamber of all clutter and minimize the reading material and "busy work" as this always tends to stimulate the brain rather than calming it. Soothing colourations, along with calming light sources, comforting and cozy fabrics, pleasant, calming wall decor and accessories and access to pure fresh air will assist in boosting the positive energy dynamics within all bedrooms. Becoming aware of what is happening with our furnishings, the materials and textures and colourations incorporated along with how we position our pieces in each and every room will empower us in utilizing the natural energy dynamics at our disposal within our homes ... allowing us to arrange a happy and healthy balance with an optimum of positive energy flow. I encourage you to experiment, and test your own reactions and that of family and friends.0
