The Rural Voice, 2003-04, Page 49rgerminate or more importantly, the
snow to melt, the National Forestry
people have a project for gardeners.
Our invaluable plant hardiness map is
undergoing some changes. It was
initially developed in the 1960s for
trees and shrubs and has also been
used for perennials although it was
not planned for that purpose.
With the help of data entered by
gardeners, a series of range maps for
individual species of trees, shrubs
and perennials can be developed.
Gardeners are being asked to register
on the Canadian Forest Service web
site and then they can log into their
account to enter their data. The
Service is looking for plant name,
soil type, your climate conditions etc.
The more data the service has to
work with, the more complete the
maps.

Canada's plant hardiness zones
appear to have changed in many parts
of the country. The zones give us the
probability of a plant surviving. I
have tried growing Acanthus or
Bear's Breech for a number of years.
The old zones indicate that I am
borderline so I am a bit more
forgiving when I am unsuccessful.
That is until I visited Patrick Lima's
Larkwhistle in the Bruce Peninsula
and saw his Acanthus growing all
over the place. Where he had
mulched for a number of years, the
plant was now setting out its own
seedlings. Weather change plus
maintenance increased this plant's
ability to survive. This kind of
information has to be taken into
consideration when you fill in your
data for the new zone mapping.
You can read all about this on their
website: http://glfc.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca
I always have better luck finding web
sites by typing in what I want and
doing a search. In this case it was the
Canadian Forest Service. Read all
about it.0
