concerned that small farmers don't
get away from their work and take
family holidays. It's going to be
tough to hand down the farm if the
example you give your children, and
their potential spouses, is constant
work.
It's workload that often leads
farmers to expand, Blackwell said. If
you have 100-200 sows, you'll
probably work every day of the year
on the farm. With 200-400, you will
probably work 313 days a year (one
day off per week).,With 400-800
you're likely to work 282 days a year
while with 800-2500 sows you'll
likely work 240 days a year.
Swine farms have continued to get
bigger so producers could have some
time off and because the farm is the
natural place for profitable farmers to
invest their money.
On the other hand, getting
larger requires a different
decision-making system than
the small operation, he said.
One of the great advantages of the
owner -operated farm of any size is
the ability to quickly make changes
to solve problems. Investor-owned
management companies are at a
tremendous disadvantage because the
owners aren't part of the operation
and don't know the problems first
hand. It's tougher to get problems
fixed under those circumstances, he
said.
"The most innovative people are
owner operators. They see a problem
and take a risk to fix it."
But Ontario should work to ensure
it is a place where all sizes of
producers, can thrive, said Blackwell
- a place where small or large
producers, producers of organic or
drug-free meat can all prosper side
by side.
Enabling that kind of diversity to
exist is the challenge of Ontario Pork
and vice -chair Larry Skinner said he
felt new contracts have succeeded in
this. Taking part in a panel
discussion, Skinner said the Pool
Plus program works no matter what
size a farmer's operation and half the
hogs marketed through the program
come from producers shipping fewer
than 500 hogs a year.
"Ontario Pork's main priority is
that anyone who wants to market
hogs can get the same access to
market," Skinner said. Farmers with
