Profile - 2nd Vice -President
Evert Ridder, 2nd Vice President of Huron Federation of
Agriculture has been involved with farm issues for many years
and served on several committees and organizations: township
director on the Foodland Hydro Committee representing
landowners on the Bruce -London powerline; nine years,
director of Hensall District Co-op of which one was president;
two years as district co-chair of co-operative restructuring in
Ontario; two years as UCO Director dealing with the windup of
UCO and the transfer of assets to Growmark. Evert also spent three years as OFA
Regional Director for Huron Northwest.
His church involvement includes several terms as elder and many years as
church treasurer.
Evert attended high school and agricultural college in Holland and took an
agricultural business management correspondence course from the University of
Guelph.
Margie and Evert raised six children, five of whom are currently farming. They
started farming in 1957 in St. Thomas area and moved to Goderich township
growing cash crops and in 1989 expanding into hogs. Currently their four boys run
the farm and Margie and Evert have retired to 10 acres of apple orchards.
Through the years of involvement Evert says his experience has been that if you
bring the farmers' needs and points of view in a well-prepared and documented
manner to the politicians and the public you do not always get everything you ask
for, but through lobbying, consultations and negotiations you can improve the
farmers' position.0
