beside his young master despite
bylaws prohibiting burials of pets in
the cemetery. A life-sized likeness of
the dog has stood in stone over the
grave ever since.
Cemeteries are also not unknown
as a place to have the "last word", tell
a joke, or even leave a puzzle behind.
The book, Tombstone Tales from
Ontario Cemeteries, written by
Harvey Medland and published by
the Ontario Historical Society has
several examples. One is an 1867
gravestone in Crosshill, near
Waterloo, with a cryptogram
resembling a crossword puzzle.
Apparently, it wasn't until 1947 that
the puzzle was first deciphered —
giving the names, dates, and prayers
for the two wives that predeceased its
erector.
Our rural cemeteries are truly
places of family, historical and
cultural importance. Of course they
are sacred places to visit to remember
and mourn, but they can also be
interesting, intriguing, and even fun
places to visit too. They are a
comfortable and valuable part of our
