Huron brochure
to promote
farm -gate sales
In an effort to promote farm gate
sales in Huron County, the county's
Field to Table program is planning to
issue a brochure to guide consumers
to those farms that offer direct sales.
Field to Table is a joint effort of
the Huron County Health Unit and
the Huron County Planning and
Development department. Planning
and Development is seeking to
stimulate economic activity at the
farm level while the Health Unit is
seeking to improve the nutrition of
local consumers by encouraging
people to eat fresh local fruits and
vegetables instead of produce that
may lose nutritional value by being
shipped thousands of miles.
About 300 packages of
information have been sent out to
local food producers. Still,
organizers are unsure if they've been
able to contact all the farm -gate sales
operations and small scale food
processors who sell directly to the
public and are inviting others to
become involved.
Anyone producing food in Huron
County who sells directly to the
public and would like to be included
in the guide can contact Cindy Fisher
at the Huron County Planning and
Development department at 524-
2188 or Jane Muegge at 482-5129.0
Donate a hog
program going again
Ontario's pork producers are once
again launching the "Donate A Hog"
program to ensure nutritious pork
products will go to hungry Ontarians
across the province.
,Paul Mistele, the pork producer
spear -heading the program,
challenged all farmers and
agricultural industry supporters to
come on -board and help support
their local food bank: "All we're
asking for is that you donate the
market value of a hog to this
program, it's easy. We've all seen
hard times and this is our way to
make sure we help our neighbours in
need".0
