` be more alert."
The drive to go faster has fueled a
rather frightening trend in the
manufacturing of snowmobiles as
well. Machines have incredible
power. Even the smallest with a 340
cc motor can "straight out of the box"
go 60 miles an hour, said Lapworth.
For young people that's "a loaded
gun".
To get around this, the OFSC, its
instructors and the SAVE units are
using education. The lesson is simple
— speed kills.
In his driver training course,
Lapworth has the students do practice
driving (not a requirement of the
course) around pylons. They visit
with a mechanic who shows thein
how to do simple maintenance, then
has the students perform the same
task. "They actually get hands-on
lessons."
And should they not learn their
lessons well. they might
eventually meet Constable
Lapworth on the trail. "We will
educate first, then we will enforce.
We will lay a pile of tickets over the
next few years. That gets the message
out. You give a guy a ticket and he
goes into a restaurant where there are
other snowmobilers and guess what
the talk will be? 'Those asshole cops'
are out and they gave us a ticket."
Disrespect is part of the job and
for Lapworth well worth it if it
improves the safety of recreational
sporting activities and saves lives.
"We have had families stop to talk
early in the morning. That's when
they go out so they can be home by
noon, before the yahoos come out.
The bottom line is they're scared. A
few bad apples ruin it for everyone,
but if we can catch a few in the
process I'm happy."0
