The Rural Voice, 2002-12, Page 29spaces winding through bushes. "We
have gone to events where people
have asked us to do something to get
these yahoos to slow down. People
are out there with their families and
they're fearful."
The team does do everything they
can to get the message out and rides '
these trails any time they're working.
Local detachments also have their
own snowmobiles, Lapworth said,
and if they have the staff available,
they'll "be out there."
"When you consider the SAVE
units' areas they're huge for six guys,
but we try and mix it up. We have a
pretty good handle of where hot areas
are."
When stopping someone on
the trail An OPP officer's
primary focus is
registration, insurance and alcohol.
Lapworth explains that there are a lot
of stolen snowmobiles. "Most times
they get parted out (taken apart and
the parts sold), but when we're
checking your papers we're down on
one knee looking at the vehicle
identification numbers to make sure
they match and that they're there."
To drive a snowmobile on the
trails the driver must have a valid
licence or if under the age of 16 must
have the OFSC driver training
certification, which can be taken at
the age of 12.
The latter, however, does not
permit unlicensed drivers to cross a
roadway if it intersects a trail.
Lapworth, who is also a driver
training instructor, says parents often
ask this question. "Can my kid take
the machine across the road?"
"1 have to tell them, again, that by
the letter of the law, no, their child
cannot drive across the road. This is
obviously another of those common
sense areas. Kids do it, we know it's
going to happen, but what 1 Ic! them
know is that if there is an accident
they leave themselves open for
charges to be laid."
With recreation the primary goal
behind the sport, it has often gone
hand in hand with alcohol. However,
the days of flasks are over. "You
cannot transport open liquor and here
again the snowmobile creates.a bit of
a problem." An open bottle can't be
placed in the trunk out of reach of the
driver, to be taken from one home to
another.
