Lean your ear this way.
Don't you tell a single soul
What I'm going to say "
Ah yes, it's Christmas time again,
and 1 am experiencing a renewed
interest in the dear old fellow with
the red suit and the round belly. The
reason can be found in the faces of
three little girls, who are being
introduced (indoctrinated is too
strong a word) to the mysteries of
Santa Claus. All this excitement has
caused me to revisit my early
impressions of the plump old man in
the bright red suit.
Afarm child of the 1940s
experienced Santa through
songs and stories via the
radio. Santa Claus took to the
airwaves in December, largely
through the sponsorship of the T.
Eaton's Company. We listened to
the old gentleman practice his "Ho
Ho Ho", read letters from children,
and chat with Pumpkinhead, a
popular stuffed bear from Eaton's. 1

knew Santa lived at the North Pole,
but I figured he also had strong ties
with the wonderful T. Eaton's store
in Toronto which I had visited with
my mother.
We were allowed to choose the
toys we would like Santa to bring
from the Eaton's catalogue. We were
told that Santa had. a limit of five
dollars per child, and were required
to stick to his budget.
Christmas memories tend to blend
and fuse together, but one Christmas
season sticks in my mind.
I was five. Early in December my
father got sick with a bad cold and
cough. The doctor left instructions
for Mother to call him if Dad started
to cough up blood. Mother, a city
girl transplanted to the farm, fed the
livestock with the help of my eight
