Don't you tell a single soul What I'm going to say " Ah yes, it's Christmas time again, and 1 am experiencing a renewed interest in the dear old fellow with the red suit and the round belly. The reason can be found in the faces of three little girls, who are being introduced (indoctrinated is too strong a word) to the mysteries of Santa Claus. All this excitement has caused me to revisit my early impressions of the plump old man in the bright red suit. Afarm child of the 1940s experienced Santa through songs and stories via the radio. Santa Claus took to the airwaves in December, largely through the sponsorship of the T. Eaton's Company. We listened to the old gentleman practice his "Ho Ho Ho", read letters from children, and chat with Pumpkinhead, a popular stuffed bear from Eaton's. 1 A farm child of the 1940s experienced Santa through songs and "r vi;;:,r stories via the radio knew Santa lived at the North Pole, but I figured he also had strong ties with the wonderful T. Eaton's store in Toronto which I had visited with my mother. We were allowed to choose the toys we would like Santa to bring from the Eaton's catalogue. We were told that Santa had. a limit of five dollars per child, and were required to stick to his budget. Christmas memories tend to blend and fuse together, but one Christmas season sticks in my mind. I was five. Early in December my father got sick with a bad cold and cough. The doctor left instructions for Mother to call him if Dad started to cough up blood.
