22 THE RURAL VOICE
Several Expos and demonstrations
are addressing the important issue of
nutrient management. LiveEiock
producers interested in learning about
leading-edge technology in liquid
manure storage can witness the new,
fully functional Slurrystore System
that will be installed in the dairy barn
by Ontario Harvestore Systems Inc.
Visitors can check out the ongoing
live manure storage demo and see
this leading-edge technology in
action. The system will tend to the
manure needs in the Lely Astronaut
Barn, which houses a live robotic
milking demonstration and a 55 -cow
herd.
New to this year's Show is the
Innovations in Manure
Technology Demonstration."
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food (OMAF) will partner with
several companies to present live
demos of some new, and very unique
manure handling and treatment
technologies.
"Our demo will be a great
opportunity to see new technologies
actually treating manure, from a
high-tech rotating drum for
composting manure and deadstock to
a vermiculture (worm) treatment that
mixes liquid hog manure and cheap
paper -fibre waste," says Jake
DeBruyn, on-farm wastewater/water
technology specialist with OMAF.
"This partnership of technology
providers and OMAF staff will show
technology that might not otherwise
be seen. Not all technologies are
suited to every farm operation, but
interesting opportunities exist for
specialized treatment and niche
marketing of the resulting product."
One technology highlighted will
be a Composting Demo. Global
Repair — a Toronto-based company
that provides innovative soil
amendments, compost equipment for
soil regeneration and education
material — will demonstrate the use
of a windrow turner for efficient,
cost-effective compost turning of
farm, municipal or industrial wastes.
DeBruyn adds that OMAF's new
demo will fit together well with the
"Integrated Solutions to Manure
Management" conference, which is
taking place on September 12 and 13
in London. Conference attendees
will have the chance to join in a VIP
tour of the Show on September 1 l .
