Gas and Salt Resources Act. A license from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is required to drill, operate or engage in any activity on a well — including private gas wells found on some farms in southern Ontario that are used by the landowners for non- commercialpurposes, such as home heating. TQday, the business of seeking oil and gas is highly technical — and expensive. According to the MNR, the cost of drilling and completing a commercial well for gas or oil in Ontario can typically range from $100.000 to $500,000. New wells drilled each year in the province may range in number from 70 to 100 — and of course not all are successful. Some wells don't produce enough —if at all. Others will require further pioneering advances to extract the oil or gas — or the rest of it. For example, some estimate that only about a third of the oil near Oil Springs has been extracted in the last 140 years. As with our pioneering ancestors, today's men and women in the oil business face many risks and technical challenges in delivering these valuable resources.0 Sources of Information: The Ministry of Natural Resources has published a fact sheet entitled "Oil & Gas Exploration, Prod- uction, and Legislation on Ontario Farms".
