The Rural Voice, 2002-08, Page 17Huron County and in The Great
School Crisis of '99, his new take on
the education system.
Why has Aylmer become so
fondly received by the audience?
"I think he represents less of a
comic figure, although he is, than (a
representative of) a previous
generation," says Johns. "It's a
generation that 1 and I think a lot of
people, feel a little bit in awe of
because they put in motion our
present society. They are the
generation that went through the
Depression and the Second World
War and fought to make things
better. I think in most ways they did,
and I think in our own generation,
there's more a fear that this
wonderful world that we've inherited
is kind of slipping through our
fingers. The rural life, and the rural
communities, even though
economically farming is said to be
the second largest industry in the
province and even though it has its
own agriculture minister, its own
universities, its own newspapers, its
own lobby groups ... whatever... it
still seems to be under siege. That
culture of self-reliance and co-
operation is also under siege."
More people are living in the
cities and the problems of
those cities are bringing
demands for more tax support but for
Aylmer, "he's not taking any of
that," Johns says. "He's set in stone
in his own era and continues to lay
on judgements from his own point of
view."
Aylmer has come out of the barn
for Barnboozled and as the play
begins is being inducted into the
Farmers Hall of Fame in recognition
of his stubborn 427 -day protest. He is
being awarded the honour despite the
fact the seed companies are upset
with him because he used his own
seed, the banks are upset because he
seldom needed credit and "experts"
are disturbed because the broke all
the models that said it was
impossible for someone to make a
living on 100 acres. "A rabbit
couldn't live there, they said, unless
he had a job in town," he chuckles.
"He was like a throwback to a
time when your destiny was more in
your own hands, when the world
wasn't so influenced by things
beyond our control," Johns says.
