for two to three months before it
starts to calcify and turn into hard
antler. The entire tissue is called
"velvet" if it is harvested prior to the
calcification process. The velvet is
harvested annually once bulls reach
two years of age. A good bull should
average over 20 pounds a year and
live to be at least 14 years of age.
The use of velvet antler has a long
and varied history. Records of use go
back over 2,000 years in the Orient.
It's use in European and English
medications date back prior to the
1700s. The Cora Indian tribes of
northern Mexico ate velvet antler
scrapings as late as the 1920s. There
is a worldwide fascination with this
renewable resource.
Antler is said to build up the
body's natural defenses against
disease and chronic conditions. It is
composed of active materials such as
minerals, trace elements, protein,
lipids and growth hormones. Because
of numerous benefits demonstrated
by research and noted through
anecdotal evidence, velvet antler is
often referred to as an "adaptogen."
This means that depending on the
individual needs of one's body,
consuming the combination of
nutrients available in velvet antler
will result in different effects for
different people. There are currently
four key areas of investigation: the
immune system; energy and stamina;
arthritis and inflammation; and the
aging process. With society's re-
newed focus on alternative medicines
and products, expect to hear a lot
more about velvet antler.
