to a new level including management
and finances. Through his initiative
the McQuails have expanded their
community share offering to his
home town of Wingham. He
promoted the idea and recruited the
new members and delivers the food
once a week to the residences of
Wingham members.
Dixon and McMullen are also part
of a new program initiated by several
farms which host apprentices,
stretching from near Hamilton in the
south to the Guelph area to Durham.
Called the Collaborative Regional
Alliance for Farm Training, the new
organization is the product of a
meeting last winter among organic
operators who offer apprenticeships.
Modeled on a similar program in
New England, it seeks to broaden the
experience of the apprentices by
bringing them together one day a
month on a different farm. As well as
a tour of the farm there's a farm
workshop. Earlier in the summer
there was a visit to a greenhouse
seedling operation. In June it was the
McQuails' turn to host the event and
they gave a workshop on fencing.
All of this is a long way from the
tortuous route the early converts to
organic farming had to follow. The
transition can still be difficult but
now there are many more helping
hands.0

Scheduled farm tours allow
veterans to share experience,
others to see organic farms
The Ecological Farmers
Association of Ontario, the
largest organic agriculture
organization in the province, is
hosting farm tours at several
members' farms that allow fellow
farmers, consumers, educators, and
families to see it up close, in the
barn and in the field.
The tours kick off with a double
billing Saturday, July 13, when
there are two tours; one northeast of
Guelph and one southeast of
Strathroy. Children are welcome,
but no pets. Be prepared to walk in
the sun or rain.
In southwestern Ontario,
southeast of Strathroy, the tour is at
the farm of Bill Lamont, who has
cash crops and rotationally grazed
beef. The tour begins at 9 a.m. with
the field crops and after a break for
lunch (bring your own brown bag)
the farm tour recommences at 1
p.m. The organic field crops include
spelt, soybeans, transitional corn,
oats, and organic sweet corn. Phone
519-264-2899 for directions.
The second tour is between
Guelph and Toronto, at the
Everdale Farm, part of the Everdale
Learning Centre. Phone 613-855-
6533. The tour will include the farm
and learning facilities, solar power
installations, straw bale cabins and
discussions of farm apprenticeship,
community share agriculture
vegetables selling model and how
the farm and learning centre
complement each other.
On Saturday, July 20, there is a
farm tour at the certified organic
farm of Bob, Carol and Martin
Passmore, who raise beef and direct
market all of it themselves. Along
with the cows and calves you will
see their pasture management
system and oat, barley, corn and
hay crops. #4495 Line 3
(Blanshard), Perth South, south of
St. Marys, 519-284-1459. This tour
starts at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, July 28, there is a
tour at Tony and Fran McQuail's
farm near Lucknow. This long-
established, 100 -acre certified
organic farm markets meats and
vegetables direct to the consumer.
The tour starts at 1 p.m. Phone 519-
528-2493 for directions.0
