16 THE RURAL VOICE
Norfolk Packers in St. Williams, a
provincially -inspected plant that
processes both hogs and cattle,
processes sausage, bacon and ham
and operates a retail store for fresh
and cured meat products. Each also
operates a farm.
The Tulpins were looking to build
a new plant to meetthe tougher
standards being introduced when, in
1999, they learned that the Terpstras
were also planning a packing plant. A
marriage of convenience for both was
formed.
For the Terpstras, the Tulpins
bring 31 years of experience and
expertise in packing. For the Tulpins,
Acre T provides a guaranteed supply
for the plant from its own barns and
those of farmers contracted to
produce for them.
The $11 million plant fulfills Acre
T's plan for an integrated system
with "field to fork accountability".
The company now has control of
product from Acre T Genetics Ltd.
through its owned and contracted
farrowing. nursery and production
facilities to processing with West
Perth Packers and marketing through
Acre T Foods. It has its own feed
production division, Terpstra Grains
and Feeds and an equipment division
Hi Tech Feeding.
The company "overview" prod-
uced for the opening, states that "As
volume increases at the plant and our
customer base grows, we will be
expanding our product line with the
addition of consumer -ready
products."
Originally plans were
announced in November 2000
for a new plant near Listowel.
When North Perth rejected the
proposal, Mitchell was the
beneficiary. When the plant moves to
two shifts 90-100 jobs will be
created.
West Perth Mayor John Van
Bakel said some residents had
concerns about the plant but he had
found the Tulpins and Terpstras very
approachable in finding solutions to
those concerns.
West Perth Packers also opens up
shackle space for an extra 5,000 hogs
a week. At the original announce-
ment of plans Ontario Pork officials
praised the move as a way of
reducing the 20,000 hogs a week that
were leaving Ontario to be processed
elsewhere.0
