Grain Financial Protection Program protects farmers
As producers continue to sell their
2001 grain corn, soybean or canola
crop, they are reminded that the
Grain Financial Protection Program
is there to protect them in case a
licensed dealer fails to pay them.
In Ontario, the Grain Financial
Protection Program assures the
financial interests of Ontario
producers selling their grain corn,
soybean or canola crop to licensed
dealers. AGRICORP administers the
program on behalf of the Ontario
government and the grain industry.
"The program provides 90 to 95
per cent compensation for claims in
cases where a licensed dealer does
not pay the producer. Because of the
strict program criteria, in particular
the fact that we license and inspect
all dealers, the program has been
quite successful in achieving its
objectives. Ontario producers who
sell their crop through a licensed
dealer seldom face a problem in
receiving payment. But if they do,
the program provides the legislated
tools necessary for the Chief
Inspector to act quickly and

years if absorbed. Some research has
indicated that low levels of
glyphosate in a plant may make it
susceptible to disease. The best
strategy is to avoid getting the
herbicide on valuable plants.
Be sure to prevent perennial
weeds from moving into your fields.
Look for weeds along the edges of
fields, in fencerows and ditch banks.
Prevent seeds from setting on these
weeds by mowing or by selectively
treating these weeds with a systemic
herbicide before they flower. Plan to
clean up fields to be planted next
year by spot treating any perennials.
A few minutes spent now to spot
treat perennials will save many
(more than nine!) minutes trying to
control them later on.0
decisively on their behalf.
Under the program criteria,
dealers must:
1. Hold a valid license issued by
AGRICORP.
2. Make payments to producers
within 10 trading days of the date of
delivery.
3. Make payments by 2:00 p.m. on
the next trading day if the grain is
sold from storage.
4. Make payments of 75% of the
current market price when the grain
is sold on a basis or `price later'
contract.
5. Deduct check -off fees and remit
the fee to the appropriate commodity
association (Ontario Corn Producers'
Association, Ontario Soybean
Growers or the Ontario Canola
Growers Association) by the 15th of
the month following the date of sale.
A producer can make a claim under
the program if:
1. Grain was sold to a licensed grain
dealer, and
2. Payment was not received based
on the dealer criteria, and
3. The Chief Inspector was
itnmediately notified of any non-
payment or late payment situation,
and
4. No arrangement to extend payment
beyond the terms of the stated time
frame was made with the dealer.
