The Rural Voice, 2002-04, Page 29head person and tell them what
you're doing. We have (health
officials) once a year to train our
staff. They create a set of criteria and
we try to meet them. We've never
had a problem."
The company has created crisis
management plans for different kinds
of crises ranging from simple fire
drills to an accident plan for dealing
with car accidents that fake place
when people are trying to turn off the
busy road into their parking lot.
Bellamere carries $7 million
dollars in liability insurance, $2
million on each of the areas of
operation topped up with a $5 million
blanket policy. The good news.
Mader said, was that liability
judgements by the courts seem to be
getting more realistic than they were
to a while.
Jf you're hoping to attract school
tours to your farm (Bellamere
gets 4,000 to 5,000 students a•
year) you need to realize the situation
has changed tremendously in the past
few years, Mader said. The
information you're offering has to be
• part of the core curriculum and you
need to provide teachers with kits to
use prior to their visit and followup
material for the classroom after the
visit. Ontario Agrifood Education
(OAFE) can provide advice.
As Bellamere grew and additions
were added on additions, security
didn't change until they had a break-
in one Saturday night leaving them
without cash or even cash -drawers)
for their Sunday opening. Thieves
came in through an ordinary
residential -type door at the back of
the market.
When they made a claim their
insurance company looked at their
security efforts and was not happy,
Mader said. They started to install
security equipment but it didn't deter
the burglars. The residential door was
replaced with more secure doors but
the thieves returned, attached a chain
to the door and pulled it off. They put
in a safe, but one week later it was
stolen and carried down flights of
stairs and outside. At one point the
keys to their equipment were stolen
and one of their pickups driven off.
It turned out the gang was led by a
former part-time sweet corn picker
who was able to get an inside look at
their security (or lack thereof).
