The Rural Voice, 2002-03, Page 29The barn uses ideas borrowed
from the Hi -Rise barn, a patented
design used in Ohio which in turn
borrowed ideas from poultry layer
barn's. Frank Hogervorst of
Avonbank Farm Equipment Ltd. had
organized a tour of the Ohio barns.
The • result was the first
"Environmentally Friendly Facility",
a 1000 -head finishing barn built on
the farm of Barry and Brian Miller
near Exeter.
The design allows farmers to
make use of the convenience of
liquid manure technology in their
operation but end up with solid
manure to spread on their fields.
Upstairs the barn looks pretty
much like any other hog barn,
Fleming said except that there are no
exhaust fans in the wall. Instead the
exhaust fans are located in the walls
of the lower storey of the barn,
drawing the air down from ceiling
vents and through the slatted floor.
That bottom floor has nine -foot
ceilings and would, if it was a
liquid facility, handle one
year's storage from the barn above.
Instead it contains absorbent, carbon -
based material to soak up the liquid
waste that comes down through the
floor from above. In the case of the
Miller farm, a six-foot layer of straw
from 251 large bales (50,200 kg.)
was put into the lower floor. In the
U.S. barns, wood shavings have been
used.
Drawing the air down through the
slats of the barn helps keep smells
out of the main portion of the barn
and draws air over the surface of the
manure/straw pile, helping keep the
surface dry and odour -free.
As well there are pipes buried in
the floor with fans that force air up
through tiny holes in the floor. This
helps provide oxygen to promote
composting of the manure and straw
mixture. The aeration fans run full
time because the aeration holes in the
floor will plug otherwise.
One of the variations in the Miller
barn is that it appears to be a normal
one -storey barn compared to the
Ohio barns that were obviously two -
stories high. The Miller barn is built
into the ground, more like a bank
barn, with the lower floor like the
stable area, with drive-in access
available at one end.
