For four years Gulutzen relied on propane and a generator for power. Gulutzen, 57 years old, had to wait two years before receiving a U.S.-made wind turbine which stands 104 feet high. The turbine started generating power for Gulutzen in December 2001 and is now the sole source of electricity for his trailer and shed. Since the turbine was installed, all kinds of people have been asking how it is working. "It's the talk of the township," Gulutzen said. people are curious about other forms of electricity now with the prospect of hydro bills getting larger, Gulutzen said. "It's the way of the future." He is now planning to buy a wind turbine to power his shop, a mile from his house, where he builds corn stoves. The greatest advantage of having 14 THE RURAL VOICE a personal electrical supply is how it saves the environment, Ziggy Kleinau said. "The benefit is keeping certain carbon dioxides out of the air," Kleinau said. Citizens for Renewable Energy promotes and runs workshops and demonstrations on alternative forms of energy. The goal of the organization is to stop air pollution by using other forms of energy and improve the outlook for ;he future. With the privatization of hydro, consumers are going to have to learn how to conserve energy, Kleinau said. "Consumers and electricity users have to face the real world." Kleinau points to studies which show that 30 per cent of all electricity that is used is wasted. People are going to have to be more aware of how and where they are using electricity as prices go up. But before people get motivated to look towards alternative energy, it usually takes a big energy crisis, Kleinau said.
