available to the pig and reducing the
need for inorganic phosphorus in the
diet. However up to 25 per cent of
synthetic lysine can be lost in the
process.
It improves the digestive capacity
of the stomach by lowering stomach
pH which kills harmful microbes and
encourages the more beneficial
lactobacillus.
The fermented feed actually
changes the micro -intestinal
architecture of the gut, creating more
surface area to absorb nutrients.
DeLange said the pigs also require
less energy to main their body weight
because they are quiet and spend
more time sleeping (one farmer
jokingly suggested they were happily
drunk).
Fermented feeding requires care
of the fermentation process,
Gadd said. The tank should
never be completely empty so the
fermentation bacteria remain active.
Certain antibiotics can't be included
in the feed because they'll kill the
fermentation process. It may be
worthwhile adding enzymes but a
properly managed fermentation
process may make this unnecessary.
ti Some people are adding probiotics
to their liquid feeding system as a
replacement for antibiotic treatments
for promoting growth, Gadd said.
These beneficial, non-pathenogenic
bacteria can attach to the walls of the
digestive system and improve food
digestion and absorption.
Organic acid supplementation is a
logical step in changing the gut
conditions to encourage beneficial
bacteria and discourage dangerous
ones, Gadd said. Harmful bacteria
don't like acidic conditions. However
acid supplementation adds cost, he
said.
There's plenty to show a reduction
in the cost of raising and keeping
pigs on a liquid feeding system,
Gadd said. Not only are there better
gains but labour costs are lower and
there's less food wastage. There are
savings to be made even in feed
preparation where feed can be used
as chop compared to being pelletized.
Even pork quality seems to
increase with liquid feeding. There is
less PSE and DFD in liquid fed pork
and the incidence of salmonella is
greatly reduced. The flavour can
even improve, especially if milk
GROWER PESTICIDE
SAFETY COURSE
There must be at least one Certified Grower for each farm
operation to purchase/use/store Schedule 1, 2 or 5 pesticides.
Most courses and exam -only sessions are offered between
January 2002 and May 2002.
For a listing of courses and exam -only sessions available
throughout Ontario, check our web site at
www.ridgetownc.uoguelph.ca/opep or check with your local
pesticide vendor. In some areas, your pesticide vendor may be
offering a local course, and may take your registration directly.
