The Total Approach Project — Encouraging the use of Best Management Practices in Rural and Urban Areas, was undertaken this year by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority as a way to find effective ways to encourage best management practices in both urban and rural areas. The study was focused on the Blyth Creek, downstream of the village of Blyth because it represented a small cross-section of the Maitland watershed with a mixture of rural and urban landowners and farming systems, plus having a sewage treatment plant for the village. There have also been a number of stream, rehabilitation and conservation projects over the past 10 years, from the C.U.R.B. program on farms to the Blyth Greenway Project within the village. Between spring and November 5, water quality sampling was done at five locations along the creek to check on E. coli, nitrates and phosphorous and the results will be released at the forum to be held at Blyth Memorial Hall from 7-9 p.m., following an open house from 3-5 p.m. Results of a survey of landowners along the watershed will also be released. Thirty landowners were interviewed by a technician to see what they felt were barriers to the adoption of best management practices, what practices they have tried, how they have worked for them and what type of assistance is required to help landowners adopt best management practices. The project team will also be working with landowners to undertake some demonstration projects in the watershed if there is sufficient interest by the community to do so and suitable projects that can be identified.°
