A great BIG thanks goes to all Huron Federation Board of Directors and staff who have helped me through my two years as President. It has been an honour to serve as President of the Huron Federation of Agriculture. One of the first duties was to make a presentation on "intensive livestock". While talking with other groups waiting to make a presenta- tion I realize that this is a "wake-up" call to agriculture. We need to ask our politicians what problems they are solving, perceived or real? The impending legislature, in my view will change the face of agriculture forever. We need to be sure that it is not a machine gun approach when a fly swatter would do. If the problem is the Ministry of Environment does not have enough staff to check on environmental spills, then hire more staff. Don't create rules that will drive animal agriculture out of Ontario. We all need to keep on top of this legislation and talk to our MPs about it. While talking to your MP be sure Slice of Huron needs volunteers A growing number of people, if they had their way, would see cows roam our countryside. Some people believe animals should live forever, nothing should be slaughtered and animals should have rights like humans. Some believe in a vegetarian diet or that cow's milk is precisely for a calf and should not be consumed by humans. At the same tithe, agriculture — sometimes without proof — is blamed for bad water. A lot of people know very little about modern agriculture, what makes up a box of corn flakes or where pork and beans come from. Some children, even in this community, have never seen a calf born or a cow milked. They wonder where eggs come from and seldom get a chance to learn about farm safety. For these reasons, we as farmers need to continue to get the HCFA ANNUAL/REGIONAL MEETING Thursday, October 12/00 Stanley Complex, Varna, Ontario Dinner: 7:00 p.m. Entertainment: Area Soloist Cara Stephenson Neil Currie - OFA GM Tickets: $10 - available from County Office Or Directors 56 THE RURAL VOICE message out, to tell our story about why we do what we do, to teach our children about agriculture. What better way to do this than the Slice of Huron? I am on the Slice of Huron Committee and we are looking for more people to help make this happen. The next organizational meeting is October 16 at 8 p.m. at the Seaforth Public School Library. Come out and help us demonstrate and teach over 1,000 school children our story, how a wide range of diverse farmers and agri-business work with nature's best.
