weather? What is the likelihood of
the crop reaching full maturity? How
much of the crop will reach maturity?
How well filled are the cobs or pods?
Do you need cash before the end of
this year? All of these questions need
to be answered before a producer can
begin to make any decisions. If cash
is needed, maybe the advance
programs should be used which
would then allow producers to lock in
some higher prices for deferred
shipment.
Corn basis levels in Ontario will
probably hold steady at import levels
into the new year because of the
likelihood of a small Ontario crop.
Soybeans may follow a similar
pattern but for a shorter period of
time. Futures prices will be the key.
If there is any reasonable strength in
Chicago prices, producers will need
to take a hard look at selling a portion
once it has been harvested and the
quality is known. If a producer has
grown a particular variety of quality
of corn or soybeans that is in
demand, he needs to do the best job
possible of handling it separately and
keeping its identity preserved. Any
potential premium should be
explored in order to add to the bottom
line.
The final marketing decision lies
with the producer, but one needs to
look at all options and not make a
spur-of-the-moment decision. Always
look ahead at the potential of locking
in good carry and not back at what
might have been except for learning
purposes. Good marketers don't
dwell on coulda, woulda, shoulda.0
