"You have to have the market
pull, anything else is crystal ball
country," warns Ozols.
Still .the tendency to use a
product or plan a process —
and hope for market realization
is still there. Take the identity
preserved (IP) system in soybeans.
Despite industry statements that it
has been in existence for 10 to 15
years, producer acceptance is only
now becoming common. With the
emergence of the South American
soybean industry, many in Canada
are saying the IP system will be the
saving grace to soybean growers.
But as of this year, there is no
crushing plant in Ontario that
segregates specialty beans. In fact,
the vast majority of those soybeans
are exported to foreign markets.
Some industry representatives,
like OMAFRA Soil and Crop
specialist Rob Templeman, speculate
the IP system might not exist as it
does today were it not for the effects
of poor commodity prices.
"Fifty cents on nine dollar beans
doesn't mean as much as it does on
six dollar beans," reflects
Templeman, referring to the current
price crunch on commodities. He
shares that view with Colin Reesor,
Commodity Marketing Program
Lead with OMAFRA, who has
nevertheless suggested the IP system
may be one of the solutions in
dealing with the impact of the South
American soybean industry.
On a longer term basis, however,
Templeman views the export of IP
beans to Japanese markets as a good
start but he also sees North American
acceptance of soy -foods as the key to
success and stability.
"We have to have soybeans as
part of the diet and not be selling tofu
or miso in Ontario," says
Templeman, admitting the task of
convincing North Americans to
switch to soy -based food choices will
be very difficult. "We have tastes
that don't change that much."
In other words, North Americans
like their meat and potatoes and
Twinkies. And regardless of soy
