Rain brings Tush hay crop in Rainy River will be presented to the best theme July 12, 2000 Why is it? You spend hours and days painting, repairing, setting up cozy, comfortable outdoor entertainment and dining areas, then there isn't the time to sit down and enjoy them. We should take the time to do these things because life is so short and time goes too fast. Our condolences go to the Teeple family, Angela, daughter of Jim and Alwine passed away in a car accident last week. It shocked the community and made each and everyone of us think about life and how important our time here is. Angie is our fourth 4-H member in the Rainy River District within the past 10 years, who has lost their lives accidentally. We arc so very sad, and so very sorry for the Teeple family in their loss. The RRFA did not hold a meeting this month because every good working farmer is supposed to be haying. Well, it's touch and go because we've been blessed with rain just like other areas around us. But you should see the hay crops! Some fields are taller than Amos Brielman and still growing. Gardens are flourishing in the district as well, so the vegetables displayed at this year's annual Fall Fair at Emo should be a great harvest. The Emo Fair will take place August 17, 18, 19 and it also will be their Centennial Celebration. The Rainy River Beautification Competition for 2000 is sponsored by the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture and the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society. There are five sections for the competition this year and the deadline date for entries is July 21. This date may be extended if entries are low in number. Some people are shy about competition. The Farm Progress Building at the arena, in the fairgrounds, is looking for exhibitors to take part in their Ag - oriented trade show. In honour of the 100th birthday celebration, a prize promoting their history. Other prizes will also be awarded. Forms are available from President Linda Armstrong at 807-852-3645 or her assistant Kim Desserre at 807-483- 5412. Congratulations to this year's recipients of the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture Bursary, awarded to a son or daughter of a RRFA member. Michelle Veldhuisen from Sturgeon Creek Annex and Laura Zimmerman from the Fort Frances High School were the students selected and who will be furthering their education. The RRFA annual dinner will take place on Saturday, October 14 at the Barwick Community Centre. Please mark the date on your calendars, it promises to be a bit different. Rainy River Farm Safety is advising farmers to wear a mask when cleaning their grain bins or anywhere there could be mice. The mouse disease, Hantavirus, has been the cause of another death in the west. Do not enter dusty crawl spaces where rodents have been active unless wearing protective coveralls, gloves and respirator. Disinfect traps between uses and use peanut butter or dried fruit for bait. Wash thoroughly after handling traps and use rubber gloves when removing dead mice from traps. An adult mouse can gain entry through a hole as small as fi'.e millimeters across. Summer is one of our busiest times on the farm. Remember to think Safety at all times when handling those cattle, when working with machinery during haying. and harvest time. Teach the kids where the safety zones are on your farm. All are so very, very important. Keep safe and think safe. Life is so very short.
