Hill says •that as a non -farmer. she
was really amazed that when the
leaders of the various commodities
were brought together, many didn't
know one another. "It's really done a
lot to get the whole group of people
to work together," she says.
Schmidt credits Hill and Museum
staff for tremendous dedication in
pulling the whole event together.
"Without them, we wouldn't have
been able to do this." Though Hill
doesn't have a background in
agriculture. she really respects the
Perth • County agricultural
community, Schmidt says.
Though the combination of the
museum and farm groups
seems strange, Hill sees a
natural connection. In representing a
county with a large rural area,
agriculture and food production has
always played a large part in the
Stratford -Perth Museum, she says.
Flavours of Perth is a very good way
to pull agriculture's past and present
together, she says.
A fundraiser for various
organizations over the years, Hill
says this is by far the most
fascinating project she's ever been
involved in. She became really
interested, for instance, in the
creation of Quality Jersey Products
by a group of Perth and Huron Jersey
producers who decided they wanted
to create their own processing plant.
For Schmidt, who with her
husband operates a diverse farming
operation that includes cash crops
such as edible beans as well as
broilers, goats, sheep, beef and
miniature donkeys, the challenge has
been to just stay involved at the
organizational level since she could
be working at booths for a whole raft
of commodities. The event is just one
of a string of efforts she's made in
promoting agriculture. "I think at
times I must be possessed," she
laughs.
"It's so important," she says, "to
make the public recognize the
diversity we produce that comes from
just around the corner. A lot of
people think food is shipped a long
distance."
"Stratford is known for a lot of
things," Schmidt says. "We'd like
agriculture to be one of those. "0
