an
interest really just wasn't there, said
Booy. When they started to farm
organically there were only a few
people to lean from at the time.
"You have to trust your own
observations and see what happens
around you," said De Groot.
Now, 10 years later, the
neighbours are starting to
come back and stop in for ice
cream and the family is starting to
feel more rooted in the community
again.
Besides bridging the gap between
their neighbours again through their
operation they are also bridging the
knowledge gap between the
consumer and the producer. The
connection between the farm and the
finished product can be easily seen
by visitors to Mapleton's Organic.
De Groot can be in the barn milking
the cows and see the families eating
ice cream. Customers licking away at
the ice cream or yogurt in generous
waffle cones can see their culinary
delight being processed through the
windows at the back of the store.
The circle between the producer
and the consumer is now complete
and it can all be seen at Mapleton
