Technology has allowed many
advances in all sectors including agri-
culture. However, people have
become reliant on technology to pro-
vide security against problems, said
Caldwell. "People have to be proac-
tiVe. We can't be so naive as to not
test our water (assuming technology
is looking after it)"
Caldwell uses the example of hir-
ing a contractor to drill a new well
with the latest advances. "If it is not
put in properly, it still can be open to
contamination."
"Generally we have taken our
resources for granted because we
have had an abundance. We drill a
well and get water."
Caldwell cites the perspective of
settlers who first arrived in the
province more than 150 years ago.
"They began chopping down trees to
clear farm land. Never was there a
thought some municipalities would
be left with only four per cent cover-
age. It is the same with water. It has
to be respected and protected."
"Whether having the septic tank
pumped out or planting a tree, you
and I have to ha\ e an environmental
conscience."0
