Though the pork industry was
satisfied with the results,
Frayne said a 16 per cent leak-
age problem is still a concern.
Extrapolating this province -wide
would mean 800 facilities with leaks,
she noted.
But even if the tank doesn't leak
and the manure is taken safely to the
field, how sate is liquid manure?
An Upper Thames River
Conservation Authority study
released last November, indicated
that liquid manure applied properly
under ideal conditions is still leach-
ing into tiles with a direct run to
streams.
Ian Wilcox, co-ordinator of plan-
ning and research for UTRCA, told
the Perth County 'Municipal
Association that during the first 30
minutes after application, the highest
rate of liquid manure was reaching
the tile.
The test was undertaken in Oxford
County during a three-week dry peri-
od on a no -till field with a previous
corn crop and application was at a
rate of 3,000 to 5,000 gallons per
acre. Groundwater from the field tiles
ran clear after two hours.
The'UTRCA study also showed
the deeper field tiles allowed less
nitrates to seep into the groundwater
system and showed a buffer zone was
extremely beneficial in controlling
surface run-off.
Bradshaw is disappointed that
environmental groups have used the
Walkerton tragedy to further their
cause with regards to hog operations.
"We have been working with them
for quite some time and I thought
there had been a consensus to work
together to make (the countryside) a
better place to live."
Because there is not enough
known about the potential for prob-
lems if manure management prac-
tices are not adhered to, PROTECT
would like a moratorium on further
expansion of intensive livestock
operations.
"The government said they don't
have the answers so it is inexcusable
(to let it continue). It is not responsi-
ble action by a government," said
Frayne.
When asked why there has been a
focus on livestock operations and the
potential for contamination of the
