"Pticec Subject To Change Without Notice
6 THE RURAL VOICE
Gisele Ireland
Ignorance can be blissful
An article by Michael Coren in the
Toronto Sun repulsed and yet in some
ways amazed me. He outlined the
agenda for a "Sexual Education in the
Classroom" symposium to be held in
June for the
teachers of our
children. The
host, and part
financier is the
University of
Guelph, with
school boards
picking up the
tab for
teachers'
registration
costs.
The subject
matter,
outlined in the
workshop had both Super Wrench
and myself riveted to the article. We
were both so ignorant about what we
considered a fairly basic aspect of our
humanity. We had no idea what a
mid -transitional transsexual man was,
let alone what he would teach in a
workshop. He is being joined by a
male transsexual who is also bisexual
and has been officially hormonally
changed from female to male. He
sounds as mixed up as I felt reading
about him. I question that my
grandchildren would benefit knowing
his experiences.
Admittedly we'd read vague
articles about Cybersex, but devoting
a whole workshop to making love via
the computer seems a bit extreme.
Will the union be a satisfying one and
will the Compaq give birth to little
Presarios 7170s? Who gets custody?
Super Wrench did show what I
considered laviscious interest in the
workshop where a group of women
who had organized and attended the
first women's bathhouse in Toronto
would lecture. It is called, and I'm
really not making this up, "The Pussy
Palace." Here I could have been
writing about my experiences in the
shower and bathtub for money and
was too dumb to catch on. Super
Wrench informed me that he didn't
think leg shaving was one of the
subjects.
There's lots more to learn about
tattooing and other forms of body art.
It boggles my mind just thinking of
the possibilities and would I want a
child exposed to them? Pierced ears
is about as risque as most people I
know get. But I think you're getting
the drift of what Michael is trying to
convey. He suggests contacting your
school board and getting a copy of
this proposed symposium and asking
if teachers are attending from your
school. If you're living in as much of
a fog as I am about HIV and lesbians,
gay and bisexual youth and cross
dressers, we both need a refresher
course on this subject.
Our Father bestowed upon us
some pretty impressive physical
equipment and the brains and
hormones to make it work. We never
dreamed you had to take workshops
to teach kids about love, honour,
commitment and celibacy until the
time is right. Come to think of it,
none of these subjects appear on the
agenda. Do you think the organizers
might might not have heard of them?
Regretfully I have to shut off my
computer now before I have
Cybersex with my Word Perfect
Program. It must be about as exciting
as shaving my legs.0
