The Rural Voice, 2000-04, Page 47concept was born during a . conversation at the local general store when one person said they could look after ice cleaning one week if others could look after it other weeks. And the community spirit has helped build the community in other ways. Back in the 1980s Walter Renwick had another idea: a local non-profit housing project. Late in 1987 the shovels went in the ground and today the neat one -storey complex is still run by a local board. These community -owned buildings remain the heart of the tiny community that otherwise consists of a store, a restaurant, a feed mill and a small number of houses. On April 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and April 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the community will go to work again, making Belmore a centre of attraction for a couple of days, raising money for local projects and, most important, creating the community spirit that has made Belmore name itself "the hamlet with a heart".0 Think of growing organic? ...Then think OCIA Did you know??? • OCIA is a locally farmer -owned and operated certifying body. • OCIA is intemationally recognized and accepted. • OCIA certification assures global market access • OCIA Ontario is co -certifying with European certifiers Notice to all Applicants For certification in 2000, OCIA standards must be in place for one year prior to the harvest of the first organic crop.
