The Rural Voice, 2000-03, Page 41News week. Jim Van Nes argued against the resolution. "We can't pass on our responsibility for our myketing decisions," he said. • He worried that packers would make up for the extra costs involved by dropping their price 20 cents all year round. "As producers I don't see how we're going to gain a single cent," he said. But John Nyenhuis, sponsor of the resolution, argued that packers shouldn't contract for all their hogs if they weren't going to be able to take them on short weeks. Arguing that farmers can't cut back on their production on short weeks he said, "We have to run our barns efficiently." The resolution carried. A fourth resolution called on Ontario Pork to use only prices from contracts based on "national cost - when releasing its weekly contract price. The resolution argued that contract prices that include ledger or window contracts, floor price contracts, packer forward and platinum contracts can distort the weekly contract price when prices ate in a trough. The resolution was approved. A resolution calling on Ontario Pork to accept enforcement of nutrient management plans by the provincial government was also approved. In supporting the resolution Russ Danbrook said anyone attending the OMAFRA/Municipal Affairs hearing in Clinton on intensive livestock operations realized there was a lot of public concern about manure management. Farmers use nutrient management as their defence against cries for more restrictions but "Enforcement is our weak link," he said. The final resolution, which was defeated, called for Ontario Pork to change the voting protocol at county annual meetings so that a full ballot is not required. John Lichti, speaking against the motion, said "This process seems to give people comfort that the system isn't being manipulated." Rather than change the system he suggested, "Maybe we need to work harder to let people know the candidates."0 ORGANIC FARMERS NEW!
