The Rural Voice, 2000-03, Page 25Peers of the farmers (hog farmers for
hog farmers) will seek a solution
between the sides. If no solution is
found the only alternative now is for
the complainant to go to the Farm
Practices Review Board. These
advisory committees should be
included in any enabling legislation
brought in by the province,
Bradshaw said, and members of the
committee should complete a
training program established by the
Ministry of Environment and
OMFRA.
Ontario Pork also encourages a
voluntary environmental
assessment program under
which a trained third party would
provide an objective set of eyes to
impartially evaluate manure handling
and storage systems.
By 2005, Bradshaw says, the
value of manure will be more highly
regarded. Manure will be injected or

incorporated immediately so the full
value of the nitrogen will be captured
in the soil instead of evaporating into
the air and causing odour problems.
One researcher feels liquid manure
will be used to control some plant
diseases, Bradshaw said.
Manure will be more uniform and
may be applied using accurate GPS -
controlled equipment. Some farmers
will be composting manure and
urease inhibitors may be used to
control ammonia. Bio -reactors will
be used on some farms to control
odours and recycle water for washing
pens.
More livestock barns will be
constructed with odour control in
mind. Some barns will use bio -filters
to control odours from exhaust fans.
Barns will be landscaped to make
them stand out less in the countryside
(a farmer may be proud of the look
of his new barn but the neighbours
may not be as enthusiastic, he says).
New styles of barns will appear
which will offer manure handling
alternatives.
