The Rural Voice, 2000-02, Page 261) The testing for GMO corn is complex in that there has to be a test for each different Bt genetic event. One test does not necessarily do all for any genetically modified organism. 2) Genetic contamination in the seed industry may be so bad that no company will be able to guarantee more than 98 per cent GEO free. 3) There is currently a higher level of acceptance of GEO soybeans than corn in importing countries. 4) The self -pollinating soybeans don't raise the same concerns about cross-pollination that corn does. 5) The issue of BST in milk in the U.S. was a real hot issue a couple of years ago. Consumers were against it, the cows were against it, the antis were against it and successfully got public donations to fight it, everyone wanted labeling and got it to some degree. Today it's a dead issue. U.S. cows are still being jabbed with needles, consumers have forgotten about it, the labels have shrunk to itsy-bitsy sizes and no anti -group could raise one thin dime today to fight BST. Jt will soon come to pass with GEO and biotechnology. Why? It's a nauseous thing to keep poking and prodding and hovering over our food stuffs, dissecting them under the bright light on the coroners examining table. We will soon tire of it, as we will find it spoils our appetites. We in North America like our food too well. For us it's a sensory experience. Any lessons from the O.K. Corral? Yeah, don't bring a knife to a gun fight! PS: Many have asked about weather and crop predictions. The Brazilian bean crop will be between 28.0 and 29.5 MMT, their corn crop will also be under 30 MMT. Reason: the influence of La Nina will continue to bring irregular weather. The U.S. corn crop will be under 9 billion bu. for the first time in many years, average yields will be off 8 bu./ac. Their soy crop will be off 4 bu./ac from 1999. Reason: lack of rain and sufficient sub -soil moisture. 2001 will be worse!° Mervyn Erb is a crop consultant with Erb Crop Management Systems Inc. in Brucefield, ON. 22 THE RURAL VOICE Model EM -100 Pictured Available in Gallons per hour Sizes of 5. 10, 25 50. 100, 250. 500 and 1,000 Burns propane. gasoline. corn, wood, ethanol or solar power VACUUM ETHANOL STILL from CPS® DOUBLE YOUR CROP PRICES AND FUEL YOUR FARM BY CONVERTING CROPS TO ETHANOL • 5 gallon per hour to 1000 gallon per hour sizes. • Can pay for itself in one year • Vacuum systems requires low heat, cost efficiency and high profits • Will more than double corn prices and prices of other crops - • • By-product (mash) contains 95% of crop's original protein and is a valuable feed product for use or sale. • Automated...tum it on and forget it.
