The Rural Voice, 2000-02, Page 25if they would tear up their RR soys.
RR beans were also "leaking" into
Brazil from Paraguay.
Australia has been saying lately
that theirs is the only GMO free
canola in the world. Just before
Christmas a friend of mine from
Ontario e-mailed me from Balarrat,
Australia where he had been
combining canola. He had just run
into 300 acres of perfectly clean, RR
canola. Seems the seed was boot-
legged in from Canada. As
Australian farmers have a terrible
time with weed control in canola, RR
canola is a godsend.
Soy and corn processors in
importing countries are
positioning right now to be
"Non-GEO" or not. In China, a
small, but influential soy -sauce -
maker (Otaka Shoyu Co., founded in
1804) is positioning to be a supplier
of "Non" soy sauce. It's strictly a
marketing move, similar to the antics
of Gerber baby food, Hiram Walker
and Canada Mist, since the
fermentation process breaks down
the original bean structure, making it
very difficult or impossible to test for
GEO or non-GEO content. However,
sales of the "Non" sauce from this
smaller -scale supplier will influence
the decision of bigger suppliers like
Kikkoman for bean purchases in
2001. Otaka Shoyu Co. has bid as
much as 50 per cent over the market
for 100 per cent guaranteed GEO-
free soybeans. That's the right kind
of pricing structure to get producers'
attention except we won't see that
price. The carrot we'll see on the
stick will likely be $1.
When it comes to segregation of
grain, producers on this side of the
49th have been there, done that and
are good at it. We've been growing
soft red wheat, soft white, hard red,
soon -to -have hard white, clear hilum,
Natto, white beans, kidneys, canola,
soys and corn for a long time and our
elevators and dump pits have the
mentality to handle it. This will
become an even bigger issue in the
years ahead when/if life science
companies develop a line of
"foodaceuticals". Get used to and be
prepared to preserve the identity of
any crop you grow in 2000.
A couple of things are becoming
apparent.
