WOOD HEATING SAFETY
REMINDERS
Most fires involving wood heat can be
traced to faulty equipment, improper
installation, or inadequate maintenance.
• Take extra care if purchasing a used
stove. Some fires have occurred because
the incorrect equipment was installed.
• Fires can be started by heat radiating
from the appliance or smokepipe. The
same can happen if the smokepipe is not
properly insulated where it passes
through a ceiling or wall.
• The smokepipe should also be
inspected at the start of each season, and
several times throughout the year. The
main danger — creosote build-up — can
be detected by tapping the
pipe. A clean pipe will
produce a metallic "ting",
while one with creosote
build-up will emit a dull
thud. If the pipe is dirty,
disassemble it and clean it
with a Tong -handled, wire
hrush.
