not enough research is being done
about the nutrition of food both for
animals and people. For instance, he
said, the move to cutting hay early
and storing it. before it is dry. in
silage bags is increasing the amount
of estrogen cows take in and is
contributing to the growing problem
of getting cows to conceive. Alfalfa,
he said, has estrogen -like hormones
that normally are reduced when the
hay is cured in the field. But hay is
being cut at an earlier stage of
development and is not being
allowed to cure leaving higher levels
of the hormone in the hay when it's
fed. The problem is compounded
when liquid manure from cows with
these high estrogen levels is applied
to hay crops in the spring and taken
up by the plants.
Traditional agriculture looks only
at' the protein in the hay and says the
early -harvested. ensiled hay is idea
for high production. "A food which
appears ideal to a chemist is not
necessarily best for the animal.- Bast
